Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has confirmed that he was targeted during a church service in Othaya, Nyeri County.
In a statement, he said that a security team assisted in evacuating him safely to his Amunyoro residence.
He urged his supporters, who had gathered in Othaya Town and Kiawara, to disperse peacefully.
Gachagua described a coordinated attempt against him. He claimed that vehicles belonging to his team were disabled, and sound systems at the event were dismantled.
According to him, a team of armed individuals, allegedly backed by police, was present at both the church and surrounding areas.
The former deputy president expressed uncertainty about their intentions after what he called a failed assassination attempt inside the church.
The incident occurred during a Sunday service, creating panic among congregants. Tear gas filled the church compound, forcing worshippers to seek safety.
Some fainted, while others struggled to breathe and had to be assisted outside.
The disruption left many elderly attendees and those with health conditions in distress.
Political commentator Chege Majuice shared a video from the scene, showing plainclothes individuals firing shots near the church.
Majuice argued that the attackers were armed and accompanied by a police vehicle.
He condemned the use of tear gas in a space full of worshippers and called for voters to choose leaders wisely in the next general election to prevent further national instability.
Gachagua thanked Kenyan leaders and citizens who condemned the attack.
He suggested that the incident was politically motivated and attributed it to President William Ruto, emphasizing that divine power remains stronger than any political influence.
