Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have arrested former Mwea MP Peter Gitau over involvement in a motor vehicle theft syndicate, with one of the recovered lorries linked to the Murang’a County government.
Central Region Criminal Investigations Officer Abraham Mugambi confirmed that Gitau was arrested alongside four other suspects during an operation that led to the recovery of three stolen vehicles.
Two of the lorries had been reported stolen from Gatanga in August 2025.
Mugambi stated that the vehicles were stolen in Gatanga on August 16, 2025, and added that intelligence gathered through the Crime Research Bureau helped track down the suspects.
Police said the suspects had earlier been arrested and released on bail in a separate vehicle theft case.
However, fresh information led to their rearrest in January 2026 as investigations expanded to include more stolen vehicles.
During interrogation, detectives said the suspects led officers to Makupa in Mombasa, where two lorries fitted with fake number plates were recovered.
One of the vehicles was later confirmed to belong to the Murang’a County government.
Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata welcomed the recovery and thanked the police for their efforts, noting in a social media post that the truck was meant for garbage collection and expressing appreciation to officers for helping recover it.
County Environment Chief Executive Mary Magochi also praised the move, saying the recovery brought relief to the county after the loss was reported.
Gitau's lawyer had earlier protested his detention, arguing that holding a suspect for more than twenty-four hours without charges violates the Constitution.
A court later directed police to complete investigations and file charges.
Detectives say the recovered vehicles will be returned to their owners as the suspects prepare to face court.
