"Beautiful?" Prof. Manyora Reacts to Kisii Women Representative Dorris Aburi Dressing Code

Political analyst Prof. Herman Manyora has weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding Kisii County Women Representative Hon. Dorris Donya Aburi's stance on dress codes, sparking conversations about cultural norms, gender roles, and legislative priorities in Kenya.

The discussion stems from Hon. Aburi's recent parliamentary activities, where she moved the Second Reading of the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Bill.

In her address, Aburi emphasized the need for stricter regulations to combat sexual violence, including provisions to address "indecent dress codes" alongside issues like the display of offensive pornographic materials.

According to parliamentary records, the bill aims to empower the government to enforce guidelines that promote decency and protect vulnerable groups, particularly women and children, from exploitation.

Prof. Manyora, known for his sharp commentary on Kenyan politics through his YouTube channel and media appearances, reacted strongly during a live session on his platform earlier this week. "This focus on dress codes in legislation is a double-edged sword," Manyora stated.

"On one hand, Hon. Aburi is highlighting real societal issues in Kisii and beyond, where cultural practices and modern influences clash. But we must ask: Is policing attire the best way to tackle sexual offences? It risks shifting blame onto victims rather than perpetrators."
