Questions surrounding the whereabouts of veteran ODM politician Oburu Oginga have finally been addressed after days of speculation triggered by his absence from several major political events.
The concerns emerged after Oburu failed to appear at a number of ODM functions, including key party meetings and public gatherings that he would ordinarily attend.
His absence sparked discussions online, with supporters and political observers seeking clarity on his condition and whereabouts.
Kiambu senator Karungo wa Thang’wa, who is considered a close ally of former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, has now spoken out regarding the matter.
According to the senator, Oburu is safe and there is no reason for panic among his supporters.
The clarification came amid growing public debate after Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai suggested that ODM should begin considering a stand in leader due to concerns about Oburu’s health and age.
Alai reportedly argued that the party needed a temporary leadership structure to ensure smooth operations whenever the veteran politician is unavailable.
Oburu’s absence became more noticeable after he reportedly missed several recent ODM activities. Reports indicated that his last major public appearance was during the ODM Youth League Convention held in Nairobi in April.
Earlier reports from ODM insiders had indicated that the veteran leader had been advised by doctors to take some time off and rest.
Sources close to the party suggested that he had been experiencing health related fatigue and was temporarily stepping away from active political engagements.
Other reports circulating online claimed that Oburu had travelled abroad for medical attention and rest, although no official statement had been issued directly from his family at the time.
Karungo wa Thang’wa’s remarks have now helped calm speculation that had continued to spread on social media over the past few days.
His statement reassured ODM supporters who had become increasingly concerned following Oburu’s prolonged silence and absence from public appearances.
Oburu remains one of the most experienced politicians in the country and continues to play a significant role in ODM politics. Over the years, he has remained influential in shaping political discussions within the party and across the country.
The discussion surrounding his absence has also reignited conversations about succession planning within ODM, with some leaders calling for stronger internal structures to ensure continuity whenever senior party officials are unavailable.
Despite the concerns that had been raised, leaders close to the ODM camp insist that there is no major crisis and that Oburu is simply taking time to recover and rest before resuming public engagements.
