Gachagua Smiles As Ruto Is Warned How Emurua Dikirr By-Election Exposed Him Badly Ahead Of 2027

The leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), Rigathi Gachagua, managed to penetrate the political stronghold of his former boss, President William Ruto, during the Emurua Dikirr parliamentary by-election.

The situation was interpreted as a sign of political change ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Although the DCP candidate, Felix Kibet Rotich, did not win Thursday’s election against the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate, David Kipsang Keter, analysts say the party mounted strong competition in an area long viewed as President Ruto’s political stronghold.

Mr. Keter received 18,266 votes, while Mr. Rotich received 10,760 votes in a constituency with 44,457 registered voters, and he was declared the winner by Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Returning Officer Caleb Kegonde on Friday morning.

Former Bomet Mayor Kipkemoi Barsumei stated that the results clearly indicate that Rift Valley voters are beginning to express dissatisfaction ahead of the 2027 election.

"The fact that Mr. Gachagua was able to help his candidate secure more than 10,000 votes despite not personally visiting the area demonstrates that voters in this region are dissatisfied ahead of the 2027 General Election," said Mr. Barsumei.

He added that senior UDA leaders cannot ignore the signal while assuming Rift Valley voters will automatically vote for President Ruto in 2027.

“Let us not forget that the President lives in the neighboring area of Kilgoris, yet Gachagua’s candidate still performed well,” he said.
