Embattled ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has fired back at claims that the opposition movement is being bankrolled by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, challenging those making the allegations to produce concrete evidence.
His response comes after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen claimed that political leaders in the opposition are under round the clock government surveillance. Sifuna seized on that statement and turned it against the government.
If security agencies are watching opposition leaders every hour of the day, Sifuna argued, then they should also be able to see him receiving money from Uhuru Kenyatta if that were indeed happening.
He dared Murkomen to come forward and show Kenyans actual evidence of any financial exchange between himself and the former President.
"Why can't he show the country evidence of Sifuna and Uhuru exchanging money?" he posed, throwing the challenge back squarely at the government.
Rather than leave the question hanging, Sifuna went further and chose to be transparent about how their movement is actually funded.
He pointed to a paybill listed on their Linda Mwananchi website through which ordinary Kenyans voluntarily contribute to support the movement's activities.
He gave a concrete example to put the allegations into perspective. The budget for their Kisumu rally stood at approximately Sh3 million an amount he said was raised through public contributions, not from any wealthy political benefactor.
"Do I really need Uhuru to give me Sh3 million?" he asked, dismissing the narrative as both false and exaggerated.
Sifuna's response is likely to resonate with supporters who have long questioned the government's habit of framing opposition activity as externally funded, rather than acknowledging it as a genuine grassroots movement backed by ordinary Kenyans.
