Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua visited Gikomba Market to stand with traders whose stalls were demolished in a late-night operation, leaving thousands of small-scale business owners counting heavy losses amid an already struggling economy.
Speaking to traders, pastors, and Christian leaders, Gachagua condemned the demolitions as inhumane and politically motivated, saying the government that rose on a “Hustler” platform is now persecuting the very people it vowed to protect.
In a bold advisory, Gachagua told religious leaders and Christians to accept financial handouts from President William Ruto’s camp but warned against voting for the same administration. He stated:
"Mapastor na wakristo kuleni pesa ya Ruto lakini kura hatutampea."
The former deputy president explained his directive as a warning to Kenyans not to trade votes for money, highlighting his deepening fallout with the President, whom he accused of exploiting the church for political gain.
Gachagua reminded the public that during the 2022 campaigns, the Kenya Kwanza team promised no forced evictions. He said the recent Gikomba raids are a betrayal of those assurances and a blow to the trust of ordinary citizens.
He further claimed that opposing illegal directives, including forced evictions, contributed to his impeachment, arguing that he was targeted for refusing to sanction the displacement of Kenyans from their workplaces.
Opposition leaders, including Kalonzo Musyoka, joined Gachagua in criticizing the government’s demolition exercise, describing it as an intimidation tactic aimed at silencing Nairobi residents who oppose the administration’s policies.
As the 2027 elections approach, Gachagua’s rhetoric has grown defiant. By advising citizens to “eat the money” but vote elsewhere, he is mobilizing grassroots resistance against his former political ally.
The Gikomba visit also marked a redefinition of Gachagua’s political identity. He positioned himself as a defender of the downtrodden, urging Kenyans to remain vigilant against leaders who exploit their suffering for political gain.
