Kitui Senator Enock Wambua has declared that as leaders from the Ukambani region, they will only accept Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka as the United Opposition's 2027 presidential flagbearer.
The outspoken senator insisted that the region would not accept any alternative candidate, emphasizing that Kalonzo is their undisputed choice for the top seat and must be handed the role.
"We don't expect to be handed any other person, apart from Kalonzo Musyoka, as the United Opposition's candidate," he said, as reported by the People Daily.
His remarks come amid an ongoing standoff between Kalonzo and Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Fred Matiang’i over how the opposition coalition should identify its presidential contender.
While Kalonzo is pushing for consensus through internal negotiations, Matiang’i has advocated for a data-driven or “scientific” approach to determine the strongest candidate to challenge William Ruto
Wambua criticized Matiang’i’s position, alleging that it could derail unity efforts within the opposition. He further accused him of being a government mole deployed inside the opposition to help scatter it.
At the same time, recent political developments have added momentum to Kalonzo’s bid, with DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua, during his Ukambani tour, appearing to lean toward supporting his candidacy.
Meanwhile, Kalonzo—recently endorsed as leader of the Azimio coalition by Uhuru Kenyatta—has proposed using Azimio as the main political vehicle for 2027, possibly under a new name, “Komboa Kenya.”
However, this idea has faced resistance from PLP Party Leader Martha Karua, who argues for a different path.
As internal debates continue, opposition leaders are planning a retreat at the Coast to agree on a unified formula for selecting their flagbearer.
