Newspaper Labels Ichung'wah A "Polished Goon" Who Is Drunk With Power Sparking Mixed Reactions

The Sunday Standard's April 12 2026 edition has set Kenya's political world ablaze with a front page that describes Kikuyu MP and National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah as "drunk with power" and tags him with the label of a "polished goon."

The paper portrays him as increasingly arrogant and emboldened by his close alliance with President William Ruto accusing him of threatening dissent and acting with a dangerous sense of impunity.

Owino linked the urgency of the rally to the recent attack on Godfrey Osotsi, noting that the Vihiga senator was assaulted while attending a private engagement.

According to him, the incident highlights a worrying trend where leaders are targeted regardless of whether they are involved in political activities or not.

He questioned the logic behind the attacks, arguing that violence appears to occur whether leaders hold rallies or avoid them altogether.

The MP maintained that every Kenyan has the constitutional right to move freely and engage with citizens across the country without fear.

The Kisumu rally, scheduled for April 26, is expected to be a key event for the Linda Mwananchi movement, which is gaining traction as a breakaway faction from Orange Democratic Movement.

Siaya Governor James Orengo has described the gathering as a significant milestone that will mark the conclusion of the movement’s initial phase before unveiling its next political direction ahead of the 2027 elections.

Meanwhile, Osotsi, despite still recovering from his injuries, has expressed determination to attend the rally, underscoring the group’s resolve.

The movement has also hinted at plans to transform into a fully registered political party, with ambitions to field candidates across various positions, including the presidency.

Additionally, its leaders have signaled openness to working with a broader opposition coalition, particularly those aligned with the “one-term” narrative.

As political temperatures continue to rise, Owino’s remarks reflect a growing defiance among opposition figures, setting the stage for intensified political activity in the months ahead.
