Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna today stirred debate in the Senate of Kenya when he publicly criticized Amason Kingi, the Speaker of the House.
The incident occurred after Sifuna’s microphone started to lose volume, prompting him to allege interference whenever senators attempt to speak.
Speaking passionately from the Senate floor, Sifuna expressed his frustration, claiming that technical issues often limit the ability of some members to contribute effectively during debates.
“Whenever some of us take the microphone, there seems to be interference,” he said, drawing attention from colleagues and spectators alike.
The comments sparked reactions across the chamber, with some senators nodding in agreement while others appeared taken aback by the direct criticism of the Speaker.
In addition to the technical glitch, Sifuna’s mood was visibly weighed down by the ongoing floods in Nairobi County.
The senator expressed embarrassment and deep concern over the devastation caused by heavy rains, noting that many residents in informal settlements are suffering. “It is disheartening to see our people struggle with floods while critical oversight is lacking,” he said.
Nairobi has experienced persistent flooding in recent weeks, with roads submerged and homes damaged, highlighting gaps in urban planning and drainage systems.
Sifuna’s remarks come amid growing public frustration over delayed response and inadequate flood mitigation measures.
The senator’s dual concerns—about parliamentary proceedings and the worsening floods—underscore the challenges faced by lawmakers in balancing oversight responsibilities with advocacy for urgent community needs.
Nairobi residents, meanwhile, continue to call on county authorities to act swiftly to protect vulnerable communities.
