Laikipia University has been ordered closed with immediate effect. All students must vacate the premises right away. This tough decision came after serious unrest broke out on campus.
The trouble started with the tragic death of a first-year student named Hillary Vulimu.
He was on a hiking trip at Subukia Falls when he slipped, fell, and got badly hurt possibly from a rock hitting him. Friends rushed to help and called the university ambulance for emergency help.
But the ambulance did not come.Students say they were told it was unavailable because it was a public holiday.
With no official help, a boda boda rider stepped in and took the injured student to St. Michael Nursing Home.He was later moved to Nyahururu County Referral Hospital, but he sadly passed away there.
Anger exploded among the students. They blamed the university for poor emergency services and negligence. Protests quickly turned wild. Students blocked the Nyahururu-Nakuru Highway, stopping traffic.
Some reports say they clashed with police, who used tear gas.Others claim students even stoned a school ambulance in rage.
The university administration tried to calm things down. They said they worked to get medical help and an ambulance was arranged for transfer. But the damage was done. Demonstrations grew, property got damaged, and safety became a big concern.
Now, with chaos spreading, the university has no choice but to shut down. Students have to leave immediately to restore peace and order.
This sad event raises hard questions, should emergency services ever stop, even on holidays? How can universities better protect students during trips and crises?
The loss of one young life has forced everyone to think deeply about safety, responsibility, and quick action when lives hang in the balance.
