Former Attorney General Justin Muturi has alleged that President William Ruto held a private meeting with senior officials from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission shortly before announcing Rigathi Gachagua as his running mate in the 2022 Kenyan General Election.
In a statement shared on X on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, Muturi recounted events he claims happened in May 2022, just days before the deputy presidential candidate was unveiled.
According to Muturi, Ruto contacted him while he was in Mombasa and requested a meeting at his residence in Karen, Nairobi, once he returned.
Muturi said that upon arriving at the residence, Ruto was not present and he waited for some time before informing him that he intended to leave.
“While I was in Mombasa, William Ruto called me and asked me to meet him in Karen when I returned. When I got there, he was not around. I waited for a while and later sent him a message saying I was leaving,” Muturi stated.
He further claimed that Ruto later called him back and revealed he was meeting three senior electoral officials.
According to Muturi, the individuals were former IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati and commissioners Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu.
Muturi alleged the meeting took place privately at the Karen residence rather than at the commission’s offices and claimed it happened two days before Gachagua was officially named Ruto’s running mate.
“They were meeting at the main house in Karen, not at the IEBC offices. The meeting was not official, and even the people coming there did not know it was happening,” Muturi stated.
He added that although he was unaware of what was discussed during the meeting, he noticed that Ruto appeared very confident about winning the 2022 presidential election afterward.
Muturi’s remarks have sparked fresh political debate, particularly as the country continues to reflect on the events surrounding the closely contested 2022 election.
