A dramatic incident unfolded in Nairobi after a woman smashed the windscreen of a matatu during a heated confrontation with her former partner.
The man, Ignatious Juma, who works as a matatu driver, was reportedly preparing to leave with passengers when the situation escalated.
The woman, identified as Winnie Akinyi, allegedly followed the driver to his workplace before the argument began. The two are said to have been in a relationship for several years and share a teenage daughter. Their relationship reportedly ended, but disagreements over their child have continued.
Witnesses said the woman became angry during the confrontation and picked up a stone from the ground. She then hurled it at the vehicle, shattering the windscreen in front of shocked passengers and bystanders who had gathered near the matatu stage.
A video of the incident quickly spread on social media. In the footage, the woman is seen running away after damaging the vehicle as several people chase after her.
At one point, members of the public are heard urging the driver not to attack her despite the damage to his vehicle.
Some bystanders attempted to calm the situation before it turned violent. A young girl in school uniform was also seen trying to step in and stop the fight as tensions rose between the two adults.
Initial reports circulating online suggested the woman had attacked the matatu because a conductor had taken her money.
However, authorities later clarified that the dispute was connected to a disagreement between the woman and the driver over school fees for their child.
A friend of the driver later explained that the couple has had a troubled relationship for years. According to the friend, the driver had been helping with their daughter’s school expenses. On the day of the incident, the woman allegedly demanded KSh 14,000, but the driver only managed to give her KSh 10,000.
The disagreement reportedly worsened after the driver took back the money during the argument, which further angered the woman and led to the destruction of the vehicle’s windscreen.
