Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has threatened to take action against Deputy President Kithure Kindiki following a tense standoff during a church service in Meru County that has sparked fresh political debate.
The incident occurred on Sunday during a church gathering attended by several political leaders.
According to reports from those present, tensions rose when rival political supporters began chanting and interrupting speeches, creating an uncomfortable atmosphere in the place of worship.
Kalonzo later condemned the events, accusing Kindiki’s allies of disrespecting both the church and fellow leaders.
Speaking to journalists after the service, the former vice president said the disruption was unacceptable and promised to pursue appropriate action.
“The church must remain a place of peace and respect. What happened today should not be allowed to continue. We will take the necessary steps,” Kalonzo said.
The Wiper leader warned that political competition should not be allowed to spill into religious spaces, noting that such confrontations risk dividing communities.
He also urged politicians to exercise restraint as the country gradually begins to witness early political mobilization ahead of the 2027 general election.
Supporters allied to Deputy President Kindiki, however, dismissed the accusations, insisting that the situation was exaggerated and that the event simply attracted enthusiastic political supporters.
The Meru church standoff has quickly drawn reactions from political observers who say it reflects rising political temperatures across the country.
In recent months, church services have increasingly become venues where politicians address supporters, sometimes leading to confrontations between rival camps.
Religious leaders in the region have since called for calm and urged politicians to respect the sanctity of places of worship. They emphasized that churches should unite communities rather than become arenas for political rivalry.
As the debate continues, the confrontation in Meru has added another chapter to the growing political tensions shaping Kenya’s political landscape ahead of the next election cycle.
