Is Babu Changing Tune? MP Sparks Debate After Defending His Choice To Call Gachagua ‘Dad’ In Public

Babu Owino has said there is nothing wrong with people calling Rigathi Gachagua “dad.” According to the outspoken MP, using such a word should not be treated like a crime.

He explained that in many African cultures, it is very common for younger people to call an older leader “dad,” “father,” or even “mzee” as a way of showing respect.

Babu Owino said the issue should not be turned into a big political fight. He explained that language like this is part of normal everyday talk in many communities.

Many people use such words to show closeness, appreciation, or respect to someone they see as older or experienced.

Because of that, he believes nobody should be
threatened or accused of doing something wrong just because they used the word “dad.”

The Embakasi East Member of Parliament also said that Kenya is a democratic country where people have the freedom to speak.

He reminded leaders that the Constitution protects freedom of expression. According to him, citizens should be allowed to talk freely about leaders without fear as long as they are not spreading hate or violence.

Babu Owino also pointed out that many leaders in Kenya are often given different titles by their supporters. Some supporters call their leaders “father of the nation,” “king,” or “mentor.”

He said these titles usually come from supporters who admire or respect a leader. Because of that, he said it should not be treated like an offence.

At the same time, Babu Owino said leaders should not spend too much time arguing about small political matters.

According to him, there are many serious problems affecting Kenyans today. He mentioned issues like the high cost of living, unemployment among the youth, and the struggles many families are facing while trying to survive.

He said leaders should focus more on solving these real problems instead of fighting over words. In his view, Kenyans want solutions, not endless political arguments.

Babu Owino also said respect in politics should go both ways. While supporters may choose to call a leader “dad” out of respect, leaders must also respect the people they serve. He said good leadership means listening to citizens and understanding their daily struggles.

In the end, Babu Owino insisted that calling Rigathi Gachagua “dad” is not a crime and should not be treated like a legal offence. He said politics should remain peaceful and focused on helping ordinary Kenyans improve their lives.
