Former LSK President Nelson Havi has raised alarm after floods destroyed part of his farm, leaving large sections of grazing land submerged and farm infrastructure damaged.
Havi shared that he visited the farm and found that a nearby river had overflowed its banks after heavy rains. The water had spread across the land and covered a large area that was previously used for grazing livestock.
According to the former Law Society of Kenya president, the flooding had already taken over about 40 acres of land. The situation shocked him because the area had never experienced such extensive flooding before.
At first, the animal appears to follow the movement of the water as it tries to cross.
The water had also swept away several fencing posts that marked the boundaries of the grazing fields.
These posts had been used to control livestock movement and protect the pasture. Their destruction means the farm will now require major repairs before normal operations can resume.
The flooding left large parts of the pasture unusable. Grazing land is important for farmers who keep animals because it provides food for livestock.
When such land is submerged, animals cannot access the grass and farmers are forced to look for alternative feeding options.
Havi said the damage he witnessed during the visit left him deeply concerned. The sight of the river spreading across his land and destroying structures caused great distress. The incident also raised fears about how continued rains could cause more destruction in the coming days.
