A surprise meeting between former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Jeremiah Kioni has triggered widespread speculation over a possible political realignment involving former President Uhuru Kenyatta ahead of the 2027 General Election.
According to NTV Kenya, the closed-door meeting took place at Gachagua’s Nairobi residence, with Kioni accompanied by former Nyandarua Governor Francis Kimemia.
The duo reportedly presented Gachagua with a sheep—an important cultural gesture symbolising respect and reconciliation in the Mt Kenya region.
The development marks a notable shift in tone, given the previously strained relationship between Gachagua and allies of Uhuru, including Kioni, who had been vocal critics during and after the 2022 elections.
In recent remarks, Kioni appeared to soften his stance, even praising Gachagua’s growing political influence in the region.
Analysts say the change signals possible behind-the-scenes efforts to unify factions within Mt Kenya politics.
Observers featured in the broadcast suggested the meeting could indicate a strategic alignment where Uhuru assumes the role of elder statesman, while Gachagua emerges as the region’s active political mobiliser—a dynamic deeply rooted in local leadership traditions.
The Mt Kenya region remains a critical voting bloc, and any shift in its political direction could significantly influence the 2027 race. The reported rapprochement has therefore drawn intense public and political interest.
While no official alliance has been confirmed, the meeting has fuelled debate about a potential “handshake” that could reshape Kenya’s political landscape, possibly consolidating opposition forces against President William Ruto.
As discussions continue, analysts say the coming months will be crucial in determining whether the engagement evolves into a formal political coalition or remains a symbolic gesture of reconciliation.
