Be Prepared: Heavy Rainfall Expected in Most Parts Starting on This Date as Kenya Met Issues Warning

Kenyans should prepare for continued rainfall and scattered thunderstorms across many parts of the country this week, according to the latest forecast from the Kenya Meteorological Department.

The update warns that most regions will see regular cloud build-up, morning showers, and afternoon or evening thunderstorms as the long rains season deepens.

In its advisory, the department highlighted that downpours exceeding 20 mm within a 24‑hour period are possible in parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and sections of the South Rift Valley.

These conditions are typical of the long rains season, which usually peaks between March and May.

Regions such as Nairobi, Kiambu, Nakuru, Kisumu, and parts of Western Kenya are likely to see the most frequent rainfall and thunderstorms, while parts of the North-Eastern lowlands and Coast may experience isolated showers.

Night temperatures will remain cool in many highland areas, especially around the central highlands and Rift Valley, where the mercury may dip significantly after sunset.

Officials are reminding residents and travellers to stay updated through official channels, as localized flooding, poor visibility on rural roads, and water‑logging in urban centres remain possible this week.

Authorities have also reiterated basic safety measures — such as avoiding walking or driving through floodwaters and keeping clear of trees and open fields during lightning.

Given the pattern of prolonged rainfall already seen this season, Kenyans are urged to factor changing weather conditions into travel plans, agriculture activities, and daily routines as the wet spell continues.
