Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa has strongly criticised Bungoma Deputy Governor Jenipher Mbatiany after she declared her interest in the Bungoma governor’s seat in the 2027 General Election, saying her move is meant to split votes.
Speaking in Kapsokwony, Barasa claimed Mbatiany is being used by Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi, who is also interested in the seat, to weaken his support in Mt Elgon.
He said Wanyonyi realised that Mt Elgon people are firmly behind him and decided to use Mbatiany, who comes from the area, to divide the votes.
Barasa said he enjoys strong support in Mt Elgon and among the Sabaot community and insisted that any attempt to reduce his popularity will fail.
He argued that Mbatiany’s entry into the race is not genuine but part of a wider political plan to block his path to the governorship.
The MP said he has already made serious political inroads across Bungoma County and remains confident that he will overcome his rivals despite what he described as political tricks meant to confuse voters.
Mbatiany becomes the fifth person to declare interest in the Bungoma governor’s seat. The seat will be vacant in 2027 when Governor Ken Lusaka completes his second and final term.
Other leaders who have shown interest include Tim Wanyonyi, Didmus Barasa himself, and former Bungoma governor Wafula Wangamati, who wants to complete his remaining term.
Her move comes at a time when several deputy governors across the country are openly declaring their ambitions to become governors.
Recently, Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Savula also announced that he will vie for the Kakamega governor’s seat in 2027 under the UDA party.
With more leaders joining the race, Bungoma politics is expected to become more competitive as the 2027 elections draw closer.
