Royal Media Services (RMS) has announced significant changes in their radio stations, replacing veteran journalists from their original shows in a move to revitalise their broadcasting landscape.
In a notice on Monday, February 9, it was revealed that Jeff Koinange and his counterpart Patrick Igunza would be moved from their usual morning show on Hot96 radio.
Effectively, Koinange and Igunza were then moved to the drive show at the same station in the evening.
The changes were confirmed by the company's radio and ICT director Fred Afune, who noted that the shake, though daring, would take effect immediately.
“By moving a morning legend to the evening or a late-night storyteller to the mid morning, we are challenging the presenters to bring their magic to a new audience and giving the fans a side of their favorite stars they have never heard before,” Afune stated.
Apart from the changes at Hot96, Radio Citizen also saw some shakeups. Jambo Kenya, the morning show at the station will now be hosted by Tina Ogal and Abdi Munai, as well as Kuka Kisondio, replacing the usual giants Vincent Ateya and Melody Sinzore, who were moved to the drive show in the afternoon.
Legendary presenter Willy Tuva was also moved from his usual Mambo Mseto show, which Qtee, Bensu and DJ Flash will now host. Tuva was then transferred to the Waks Tikitaka show.
The new show for Tuva is usually composed with slang, usually the Sheng language, which is unusual for Tuva since he is primarily known for a Swahili show.
The reshuffle is seen as part of RMS’s broader strategy to refresh its programming and engage listeners with new formats.
Mulembe FM and Inooro FM are also revising up their lineups, with Omar Bakuli moving from Mulembe’s Breakfast Show to the Drive Show, Pamela Kadima taking over Breakfast.
At Inooro, Jeff Kuria and Nyoxx join the Drive Show ‘Cua Cua’ while legendary late-night host Nderitu Waihura takes a break as Njuguna and Karwimbo fill his slot.
Typically, radio stations tend to experiment by taking Popular morning hosts who often have a strong following to evening slots to potentially allow the station to attract their loyal listeners to other parts of the day.
