Police in Nyeri County have launched investigations after the decomposed body of a 23‑year‑old woman was discovered in a bush at Ithekahuno, Gichira, Tetu.
The remains of Beatrice Nyawira were found on February 12, 2026. She had been reported missing two weeks earlier, raising concern among her family and neighbors.
Authorities confirmed the discovery led to the arrest of Joseph Njoroge Weru, a man linked to the victim.
Detectives revealed that Weru attempted to divert attention from the case by claiming he had been ordered to assassinate Mathira Member of Parliament Erick Wamumbi.
He alleged that two police officers had tasked him with trailing the MP and even participated in an identification parade at Karatina police station where he pointed out the officers.
However, detectives later concluded that these claims were fabricated to cover up Nyawira’s death.
Records show that on January 29, 2026, Nyawira’s sister filed a missing person report at Karatina police station. The case was referred to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations in Mathira East.
The following day, two officers accompanied the sister to Nyawira’s residence, where they found Weru alone. He was briefly detained and questioned but released. Weeks later, Nyawira’s body was discovered, and suspicions returned to Weru.
On February 13, senior police officers from Central region and Nyeri County conducted another identification parade with Weru present alongside MP Wamumbi. Despite his accusations, investigators determined his story was inconsistent and intended to mislead.
Police now believe Weru invented the assassination plot to deflect suspicion from Nyawira’s murder.
Nyawira’s family has identified her remains, and an autopsy is planned to establish the cause of death. Police say the investigation is ongoing, with Weru held in custody as detectives piece together evidence.
Authorities have promised a thorough probe to ensure justice for the victim and her family.
