Nominated MP Sabina Chege has sharply criticised former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of portraying himself as untouchable in Mt. Kenya politics.
Speaking during an interview on Morning Cafe on TV47, Chege claimed that Gachagua has “made himself the Jesus of Mt. Kenya” and tends to demonize leaders who do not support his political stand.
According to the former Murang’a Woman Representative, such an approach risks dividing the region instead of uniting it. She argued that leadership requires humility, tolerance and the ability to accommodate different opinions.
“You cannot win people’s hearts by attacking and isolating those who disagree with you,” Chege said, adding that Mt. Kenya voters are independent-minded and deserve respectful engagement from their leaders.
Her remarks come amid growing political realignments in the Mt. Kenya region, where leaders are positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election. Gachagua has in recent months intensified his grassroots engagements, presenting himself as the region’s key political voice.
However, Chege insisted that strong leadership should focus on inclusivity rather than personality-driven politics. She urged leaders to improve their people skills and avoid creating political enemies within their own backyard.
The comments are likely to fuel fresh debate within Mt. Kenya politics, where competition for influence continues to shape alliances and rivalries.
As political temperatures slowly rise, observers say such exchanges highlight the shifting dynamics in the vote-rich region, which is expected to play a decisive role in the next presidential contest.
