Karungo wa Thang’wa has congratulated former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, describing him as the only national leader bold enough to stand with Kenyans and openly confront President William Ruto’s government following the death of opposition leader Raila Odinga.
Speaking during a public address on February 7, 2026, Thang’wa praised Gachagua’s political courage, saying he has remained fearless at a time when many leaders are choosing silence.
In remarks captured in a widely circulated photo from the event, the senator said Gachagua has consistently stood with ordinary citizens despite political pressure.
“Gachagua has stood with Kenyans. Imagine what we would have done without him. What would we have done if we were left with someone like Kimani Ichung’wah? When Gachagua speaks, they fear,” Thang’wa said.
According to the senator, the country has experienced a leadership gap since the passing of Raila Odinga, with few politicians willing to take on the government directly. He argued that Gachagua has stepped into that space, positioning himself as a strong voice against what he termed as intimidation and excesses by the current administration.
Thang’wa claimed that Gachagua’s outspoken nature has unsettled those in power, noting that his statements resonate with frustrated Kenyans grappling with the high cost of living, unemployment and governance concerns. He criticised leaders he described as timid, accusing them of prioritising political survival over defending the public.
The senator further suggested that Kenya would be in a difficult position if opposition politics were left in the hands of leaders who fear State House. He insisted that strong leadership requires courage, especially during moments of national uncertainty.
He congratulated Gachagua for what he called standing on the side of the people, urging him to remain firm and continue speaking out.
Thang’wa’s remarks have sparked debate, further fuelling discussions about Gachagua’s growing role in shaping opposition politics in the post-Raila era.
