A 31-year-old father from Eldoret, desperate for work, took a risky stand that caught people's attention and started a conversation about joblessness in Kenya.
Nicholas Wepukhulu climbed a billboard in Eldoret and stayed there for almost four days, hoping it would get him a job.
The father of three said he felt like he had no other choice after failing to find steady work repeatedly.
Before leaving home, Nicholas told his wife he was going to work and gave her five hundred shillings to support the family for a few days.
She found out where he was after learning about the man on a billboard and went there with their kids.
Seeing his family looking so helpless really got to him, but he said he was doing it because he needed to provide for them.
Nicholas said that life has been hard since he was a kid. He finished high school but couldn't continue his education because he didn't have the money.
After school, he learned electrical work on the job and now earns a little from time to time. But without certification, he can't get a formal job.
He said he climbed the billboard early Monday morning and came down Thursday evening.
He hoped that leaders or the media would notice his protest, but only regular people responded. Some encouraged him, while others criticised him.
While on the billboard, Nicholas only had water and glucose. One person gave him warm clothes. He didn't eat solid food to avoid feeling uncomfortable being up there.
Nicholas said he thought about hugging a tree as a protest, but he felt it wouldn't get enough attention. He even tried to get permission from county officials, but it wasn't clear how to do it.
All he wants is a job. He said he's even willing to work as a motorcycle taxi driver if he gets the chance.
His story shows how tough it is for many jobless Kenyans and how far some are willing to go to be heard.
