The political ripple effects of a massive rally in Busia County are continuing to stir debate after reports emerged of an emergency strategy meeting at State House.
According to intelligence-style reports, the rally’s turnout caught sections of government off guard, contradicting earlier expectations that the event would be poorly attended.
The reported meeting allegedly brought together some of the country’s most influential political figures, including Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.
Also said to be present were governors from Nyanza and Mt. Kenya, along with several MPs from Nyanza. Oburu Odinga’s reported absence, despite being invited, has only deepened speculation.
Sources claim President William Ruto used the meeting to express dissatisfaction with what he sees as contradictory behavior from ODM.
While some party leaders speak of cooperation within government, others—particularly the party’s secretary general—have remained openly critical and continue to mobilize politically charged rallies.
According to the reports, the president questioned whether ODM can credibly claim to support a broad-based political arrangement while simultaneously fueling opposition-style mobilization.
This concern is said to have prompted a directive to Mudavadi and Wetang’ula to urgently reinforce government support in Western Kenya.
The meeting reportedly also focused on Mt. Kenya, with one governor allegedly promised political security and favorable arrangements if he successfully delivers support for President Ruto’s re-election bid.
Another sensitive issue said to have been raised involves divisions within the Odinga family.
Sources claim the president expressed frustration that criticism continues from some quarters despite perceived accommodation of others.
While none of the claims have been officially confirmed, the reports suggest a leadership grappling with shifting loyalties and rising uncertainty.
If accurate, the developments highlight how rapidly Kenya’s political landscape is evolving, with every rally now capable of triggering high-level recalculations.
