Lang’ata Member of Parliament Phelix Odiwuor, widely known as Jalang’o, has announced that he plans to run for the Nairobi Senate seat in the 2027 General Election.
His declaration signals an early start to what could become one of the most competitive political races in the capital.
Speaking during a radio interview on Tuesday, the first-term MP confirmed that he is ready to seek a bigger leadership role after serving Nairobi residents in Lang’ata since 2022.
Jalang’o said his decision was informed by his experience on the ground and his interaction with people from different parts of the city.
He expressed confidence in his ability to represent Nairobi at a higher level, noting that his work and public engagements have helped him understand the challenges facing urban residents.
According to him, leadership is about listening to people and offering practical solutions to their daily struggles.
The announcement did not come as a complete surprise.
In recent weeks, Jalang’o has been seen attending several public functions alongside Lands Principal Secretary Nixon Korir and South C Ward MCA Abass Khalif.
Khalif has already declared his interest in contesting for the Lang’ata parliamentary seat, a move that further strengthened speculation about Jalang’o’s political future.
Political observers believe these early movements point to growing realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
Nairobi, being the country’s political and economic hub, often attracts intense competition as leaders seek influential positions.
If he proceeds with the bid, Jalang’o is likely to face incumbent Senator Edwin Sifuna, who also serves as the Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
The potential contest could create a major political showdown within the party, depending on how the nomination process unfolds.
At the same time, Sifuna has recently found himself at the centre of internal party disagreements, with some senior officials questioning his public statements on party matters.
Party leaders have urged members to maintain unity and align with official positions to avoid confusion among supporters.
Despite the tensions, Sifuna has remained firm and indicated that he will continue serving both as Senator and as the party’s Secretary General.
Jalang’o’s early declaration shows that the race for Nairobi’s top seats is already taking shape, even before the official campaign period begins.
Analysts expect more leaders to announce their ambitions in the coming months as political competition gradually builds.
