Bad News to Junet, Oburu, Wanga and Others as Mt Kenya Leaders Deliver This Message on 2027 Election

Leaders from the Mount Kenya region have delivered a firm message ahead of the 2027 general election, declaring that the deputy president's position is not open for negotiation or discussion.

This stance comes as a direct response to calls from Orange Democratic Movement figures, including Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga, who suggested the slot should go to ODM as part of coalition arrangements with President William Ruto's United Democratic Alliance.

The declaration underscores the region's insistence on retaining the deputy presidency, currently held by Kithure Kindiki.

Several leaders emphasized that the seat belongs to Mount Kenya due to the bloc's significant electoral contribution and support for Ruto's re-election bid.

They described ODM's push as provocative and unnecessary, urging focus on cooperation and development rather than early haggling over positions.

Allies of Deputy President Kindiki, including Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku, Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, and MPs such as Nyeri Town's Duncan Maina Mathenge, have repeatedly affirmed that there is no vacancy.

Mathenge bluntly advised those eyeing the role to continue hoping without success, while stressing that Kindiki remains the running mate.

Other voices, like Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri, highlighted that Mount Kenya will demand the position based on votes delivered to the president.

The remarks follow ongoing coalition dynamics in the broad-based government, where ODM joined after the 2022 elections but has pushed for greater influence.

Oburu Odinga's comments, along with interests from figures like National Assembly Majority Leader Junet Mohamed, Minority Whip Opiyo Wandayi, and others in ODM circles, prompted the strong rebuttal.

This development highlights mounting early tensions in the ruling alliance as 2027 approaches. Mount Kenya leaders appear united in protecting their influence, potentially complicating negotiations.

While some prioritize service delivery over politicking, the firm position signals that any shift in the deputy presidency would face resistance from the region. As political realignments continue, this message serves as a clear boundary in the evolving landscape.
