Things Get Ugly for Bishop Kiengei Just Days After Hosting President William Ruto in His Church

Bishop Benson Kamau Kiengei, popularly known as Bishop Kiengei, is facing intense backlash from young worshippers and sections of the public after his Jesus Compassion Ministry (JCM) church in Ruiru hosted President William Ruto for a service on Sunday.

The event, part of the church's third anniversary celebrations, drew large crowds and featured prominent national and county leaders.

President Ruto praised the bishop for his compassion toward the people of Ruiru and Kenya, assuring continued support for the church's work. Kiengei welcomed the president warmly, with the service proceeding amid cheers and a packed congregation.

However, the decision has sparked fury among youth, particularly Gen Z members who once viewed the bishop as an ally.

Young worshippers accused him of betraying an earlier vow not to host politicians in his church until they improved their relationship with citizens.

Kiengei had previously warned religious leaders against associating with politicians, stating it could cost them congregants and emphasizing that churches should prioritize listening to the people over aligning with power.

Criticism spread rapidly online, with many expressing disappointment over what they see as a sudden shift in stance.

Some highlighted his past solidarity with Gen Z activists, including hosting them at the church during calls for justice and accountability. The move has led to accusations of hypocrisy and selling out, with voices urging him to explain the change.

The controversy escalated further when Pastor Charles Wachira, who led JCM's United States branch, announced his immediate resignation.

He cited concerns over leadership principles, moral discomfort, and the church's recent public engagements creating confusion and division, particularly among the youth demographic.

The backlash underscores ongoing tensions between faith leaders and political figures in Kenya, especially amid youth frustration with governance issues.

While some defended the hosting as inclusive, the episode has damaged Kiengei's image among segments that once supported him strongly.

As reactions continue, the incident highlights the challenges religious institutions face when navigating politics in a polarized environment.
