Homabay Town Member of Parliament Peter Kaluma has stirred debate after former Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu declared his intention to run for the Kisii gubernatorial seat in the 2027 elections.
Kaluma questioned Machogu’s past performance both as a Member of Parliament and as a Cabinet Secretary, drawing attention from political observers and residents of Kisii County.
Machogu’s entry into the race adds a new layer of competition.
He will face off against strong contenders, including the current Governor Simba Arati, who defeated him in the 2022 election.
Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has also shown interest in the governor’s seat, making the race closely watched and highly competitive.
The decision by Machogu marks a new chapter in his political career.
He has expressed disagreements with President William Ruto and suggested that some Kisii leaders influenced his removal from the Cabinet.
Machogu has also raised concerns about the United Democratic Alliance party, which he was part of in the last election cycle.
Recently, Machogu has aligned himself with former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.
He has shown support for Matiang’i’s presidential plans under the Jubilee Party, signaling possible shifts in political alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.
