Gachagua Attacks Push Opposition to Seek Urgent Police Action

In the letter, the opposition says former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has been the most affected, claiming he has suffered not less than 24 attacks since his impeachment from office in October 2024.

Signed by Democracy for the Citizens Party deputy leader Cleophas Malala, the letter states that the visit seeks to formally raise serious complaints and engage police leadership on the safety, security, and protection of opposition leaders and their supporters.

The letter cites the most recent incident on January 25, 2026, at Witima Anglican Church in Othaya, Nyeri County, where goons and police allegedly torched vehicles, damaged others, lobbed teargas inside the church, and injured worshippers.

Mr Malala says the visit was prompted by sustained harassment, intimidation, and violations of rights against opposition leaders across the country, adding that despite multiple reports to police stations, no investigations, updates, or corrective actions have followed.

The delegation expected to meet Mr Kanja will include Mr Gachagua, People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Jubilee deputy party leader Fred Matiang’i, DAP-K boss Eugene Wamalwa, Justin Muturi, and Omingo Magara.

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, a principal in the United Opposition, said he will not join the delegation due to his current position but expressed full solidarity, warning of violence and persecution driven by political intolerance.

The letter lists 23 other incidents, beginning with a November 28, 2024 attack at a funeral in Limuru, Kiambu County, where Mr Gachagua was allegedly attacked by organised criminal gangs operating under police supervision.

Other incidents include teargas attacks in Nyandarua, disruptions in Nyeri, Nairobi, Kakamega, and Murang’a counties, with the opposition alleging coordinated violence involving goons and police, including a July 2025 attack where live ammunition was reportedly used.
