Six Men Arrested in Meru After Disturbing Assault Video Sparks Public Outrage

Police in Meru have arrested six men believed to be behind a shocking sexual assault that was recorded and shared online earlier this week.

The disturbing footage spread quickly on social media, triggering anger and urgent calls for action from the public.

According to investigators, the attack happened on Monday, December 1, in the Laare area of Igembe North.

Officers at Laare Police Station received a distress call from residents who reported that a young woman had been surrounded and assaulted by several men who were said to be part of a traditional circumcision procession.

Police officers rushed to the scene and found the victim in a traumatized state. Her clothes were torn, and she had suffered visible injuries.

She was immediately taken to Nyambene Hospital, where she received medical care and support.

Following the rescue, detectives launched a large operation to trace the attackers. Using intelligence from locals, phone records, and forensic evidence, officers carried out coordinated raids in several areas across the region.

The intensified search led police to Irinde, Lubwa, and Kiarama, where the six suspects were found hiding separately.

The arrested men have been identified as Dennis Mwirigi, Ismael Gichuge, Elijah Muriki, Isaac Ntomauta, Joseph Marete, and Phineas Mutali.

They now join three other suspects who were picked up earlier on the day of the attack, bringing the total number of arrests to nine.

All suspects are currently in custody and will be presented in court once processing is complete.

Detectives say they are still following more leads and expect additional arrests as investigations continue.

This incident has added to the growing public concern about the rising cases of gender-based violence in the country.

Security agencies have come under pressure to respond quickly and firmly to such crimes, especially those involving young women and minors.

The Meru case follows another recent tragedy in Kirinyaga County, where police arrested three men linked to the murder of a woman whose body was discovered last month.

The victim, Jackline Waruguru Kathuri, was found with severe injuries after disappearing from her home. Forensic investigations later led officers to the suspects who are now facing charges.
