IEBC Schedules February 2026 By-Elections to Fill Vacant Seats Across Kenya

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced that several by-elections will be held on February 26, 2026, to fill vacant parliamentary and county assembly seats in different parts of the country.

In a gazette notice issued on Friday, IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon confirmed that the polls will cover constituencies and wards left without representation following deaths, resignations, and previous electoral transitions.

One of the key contests will be the parliamentary by-election in Isiolo South Constituency. The seat became vacant after the death of Mohamed Tubi, who was elected during the 2022 General Election.

IEBC stated that preparations for the poll are already underway, with political parties expected to begin internal nomination processes ahead of the election date.

The commission also announced two Member of County Assembly (MCA) by-elections in Mbeere North Constituency, Embu County.

The affected wards are Muminji and Evurore. According to IEBC, the seats fell vacant after the sitting MCAs resigned to contest parliamentary positions during the by-elections held on November 27, 2025.

In Kakamega County, voters in West Kabras Ward, Malava Constituency, will also head to the ballot to elect a new MCA on the same day.

IEBC said the coordinated scheduling of the by-elections is intended to ensure efficiency and cost-effectiveness while allowing adequate time for voter education and logistical planning.

The announcement comes weeks after IEBC officially gazetted winners of the November 27 by-elections, which were held to fill various senatorial, parliamentary, and county assembly vacancies across the country.

The results were published in a special issue of the Kenya Gazette on December 1, confirming newly elected leaders.

Among the notable outcomes from the previous polls was the election of Kiprono Chemitei of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) as Senator for Baringo County.

Several constituencies also elected new Members of Parliament, reflecting a highly competitive political environment.

IEBC reiterated that all upcoming by-elections will be conducted in strict compliance with the Constitution, the Elections Act, and relevant electoral regulations.

The commission assured voters that measures are being put in place to guarantee transparency, security, and credibility throughout the process.

“As a commission, we remain committed to delivering free, fair, and credible elections while safeguarding the will of the people,” IEBC said in its notice.
