Tension Brews as Senators and Governors Face Off Over New Oversight Bill

A fresh political battle is looming between senators and governors after Narok Senator Ledama Olekina introduced a new law proposal that could change how counties are monitored.

The County Oversight and Accountability Bill, 2024, aims to strengthen the Senate’s power in keeping track of how county funds are used.

If passed, the law would give senators greater authority to question and investigate the spending of national funds allocated to counties.

Senator Ledama Olekina argues that the move is meant to promote transparency and accountability at the county level.

He believes that taxpayers deserve to know how their money is spent and that stronger oversight will help curb misuse of funds.

However, not everyone is pleased with the proposal.

Several governors have voiced their concerns, saying the Bill could interfere with their independence and make counties appear as if they are being controlled from Nairobi.

Some have even described it as a political move meant to weaken devolution.

The tension between the Senate and the Council of Governors is not new.

For years, both sides have disagreed over who should have the final say when it comes to county spending and accountability.

Supporters of the Bill, on the other hand, say it will close existing loopholes that have allowed corruption to thrive in some counties.

They believe that empowering senators to demand better records and audits will improve service delivery.

As the debate continues, Kenyans are closely watching to see whether this Bill will mark a new era of transparency or deepen the power struggle between national and county leaders.

If approved, this law could reshape the balance of power between governors and senators for years to come.
