Dr. Willy Mutunga Blasts Oburu Odinga for Betraying Raila Odinga’s Legacy in Favor of Ruto

Former Chief Justice Dr. Willy Mutunga has issued a scathing rebuke against the Odinga family.

Accusing them of allowing Raila Odinga’s political legacy to be “auctioned” to President William Ruto’s administration for personal and political gain.

In a strongly worded statement circulating on social media, Dr. Mutunga lamented that families of Kenya’s liberation icons have, time and again.

Betrayed the ideals their loved ones fought for  trading truth and justice for political convenience and financial favors.

“My friend, families allow the bodies and legacies of our heroines and heroes to be buried by classes and regimes that oppress us for just 30 pieces of silver. 

Families are corrupt, greedy, and divided. RAO’s legacy is being auctioned on the political exchange market,” Mutunga stated.

The former Chief Justice appeared to be responding to recent political developments within the Azimio la Umoja Coalition.

Where Raila Odinga’s elder brother, Senator Oburu Odinga, has been accused by some opposition supporters of warming up to the Ruto administration under the guise of national dialogue and broad-based governance.

Dr. Willy Mutunga, known for his fierce defense of democracy and constitutionalism, argued that such moves dishonor the decades-long struggle Raila Odinga waged for justice, multiparty democracy, and the rule of law.

He warned that Kenya’s liberation history risks being rewritten by political opportunists who are quick to embrace state patronage while ignoring the sacrifices made by freedom fighters and reformists.

“When families of heroes align themselves with oppressors, they don’t just betray their kin — they betray the people’s struggle,” Mutunga said.

The comments have triggered heated debates within political circles, with some leaders defending Oburu Odinga’s right to engage in dialogue, while others agree with Mutunga’s criticism.

Azimio loyalists have expressed frustration over what they perceive as the slow disintegration .

Of the opposition movement since Raila’s death, citing lack of unity and direction among its leaders.
