Uproar as Ugandans are Nabbed With Kenyan ID's in An Attempt to Breach 2027 Elections

Residents of Busia County have raised serious concerns after several Ugandan nationals were reportedly found in possession of Kenyan national identity cards, sparking fears over illegal documentation and possible interference in the 2027 General Elections.

The controversy has stirred tension in the border county, with locals accusing authorities of failing to properly vet foreigners before issuing them with Kenyan identification documents while genuine Kenyan citizens continue to face delays and strict verification procedures.

According to residents, the porous nature of the Kenya-Uganda border has made it easier for undocumented individuals to move freely between the two countries and unlawfully access government services reserved for Kenyan citizens.

Some residents claimed that many locals, especially youths applying for national IDs for the first time, are subjected to lengthy vetting processes involving chiefs and elders, yet foreigners allegedly obtain the documents with little scrutiny.

The issue has now triggered political anxiety ahead of the 2027 General Elections, as residents fear that individuals holding Kenyan IDs may also succeed in registering as voters and participating in the country’s electoral process.

Busia County has historically experienced challenges linked to cross-border movement because families from both Kenya and Uganda share close cultural ties, intermarriages, businesses, and daily social interactions that often blur nationality distinctions.

Government officials have, however, defended the situation by explaining that many Ugandans living in Busia are legally married to Kenyan citizens and therefore qualify for documentation and residency recognition under Kenyan immigration laws.

Immigration Principal Secretary Dr. Belio Kipsang recently urged chiefs and local administrators to sensitise foreign spouses living legally in Kenya so they can regularise their stay through lawful documentation channels instead of remaining undocumented.

Security experts warn that illegal acquisition of national identity cards can expose the country to risks such as voter fraud, criminal infiltration, tax evasion, and abuse of public services including healthcare and education.

Human rights groups have meanwhile called on the government to strike a balance between protecting national security and respecting the rights of cross-border families who have peacefully lived together for decades in the East African region.
