Kisumu: Babu Owino Announces Massive Protest Over Alleged DCI Harassment

On 6 May 2026, Embakasi East Member of Parliament announced plans for a major demonstration in Kisumu over alleged intimidation of young people by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

His remarks have sparked widespread political debate and increased public attention on the security situation in the region.

According to the legislator, pressure and fear among young residents in Kisumu have reached alarming levels due to what he described as repeated harassment by investigative officers.

He warned that continued actions by security agencies could push residents to organize public protests in response to the growing concerns.

During his statement, he said that locals may stage a “huge maandamano” in the city if the alleged intimidation persists.

Babu Owino argued that young people should be allowed to carry out their daily activities without fear or interference from authorities.

He emphasized that trust between citizens and security institutions could be weakened if claims of intimidation are not addressed.

His comments have since intensified political conversations, with both supporters and critics weighing in on the matter.

Some political allies and youth groups have backed the proposed protests, claiming that demonstrations are necessary to defend the rights of residents and demand accountability from law enforcement agencies.

Others, however, have urged leaders to pursue dialogue and peaceful engagement to avoid escalating tensions or disrupting normal activities within Kisumu.

Observers note that the situation is being closely monitored because of the potential political and social impact it could have in the region.

Attention now remains focused on whether the planned protests will proceed and how security agencies and local authorities will respond in the coming days.

So far, officials have not released an official statement addressing the allegations raised by the legislator. It is also unclear whether organizers of the proposed demonstrations have submitted the required permits or coordinated formally with authorities.

As uncertainty continues, Kisumu has become a major point of political focus, with many stakeholders awaiting further developments and official communication regarding the planned action.
