Tension early erupted in Nyandarua during the requiem mass for the late Ol Kalou MP David Njuguna Kiaraho on Wednesday, as state officials tried to prevent Nyandarua Senator John Methu from reaching the main dais.
The service was held at the proposed Nyandarua University grounds in Captain area, Ol Kalou.
A video shared on X by Jim Njue quickly went viral, showing security officers guiding Senator Methu toward the elevated platform.
Methu appeared cautious, signaling for patience as he moved with his entourage. Locals watched calmly while police worked to maintain order.
The official program had omitted key opposition figures, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, and in some reports, Senator Methu.
This exclusion raised questions online about political maneuvering during the mourning. Gachagua had arrived early to pay his respects despite being left out.
Senator Methu had previously eulogized Kiaraho in the Senate, calling for unity. Resistance from officials sparked debates about political intolerance.
Hundreds of mourners attended, and family members, including the widow, delivered emotional tributes uninterrupted.
The episode reflects deeper political divisions ahead of the Ol Kalou by-election. Both Ruto and Gachagua are expected to assert influence.
The viral footage has ignited discussions about leadership behavior during mourning, showing grief and political tension intertwined in Mt Kenya.
