Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has once again stirred political debate after making remarks widely interpreted as an open invitation to supporters of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to consider joining his political camp, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).
Addressing supporters, Gachagua said: “Wafuasi wa ODM, Kasongo akimaliza ODM msiwe na wasiwasi. Kujeni DCP tukae pamoja tuokoe Kenya pamoja!”—a statement that has quickly gone viral across political circles and social media platforms.
His comments come at a time when Kenya’s political landscape is undergoing intense realignment ahead of the 2027 general election, with opposition factions positioning themselves for alliances and defections.
Gachagua’s DCP, which he launched in 2025, has been actively seeking to expand its influence beyond its initial strongholds, including recent by-election gains that signaled modest but growing support.
In recent months, Gachagua has also been vocal about the future of opposition politics, frequently criticizing ODM’s internal direction while at the same time suggesting openness to collaboration with leaders and supporters from rival political camps.
Political analysts say this latest message appears aimed at consolidating anti-establishment sentiment while weakening ODM’s traditional voter base in key regions.
The remarks have sparked mixed reactions. Supporters view them as a call for unity and national rebuilding, while critics argue they reflect the deepening political rivalry and strategic attempts to lure voters through emotionally charged messaging.
ODM leaders have not issued an official response to the latest statement, but political observers expect pushback as the rivalry between emerging opposition formations and established parties intensifies.
As Kenya edges closer to 2027, such exchanges are likely to become more frequent, signaling an increasingly competitive and unpredictable political season ahead.
