A family in Nyeri County has been left devastated following the tragic death of a 20-month-old child in an incident that has shocked the community.
The toddler, identified as Mary Wanjiru Muhinja, was reportedly killed by her cousin in Ngondo village, Tetu Constituency, after a dispute over sugarcane.
According to reports, the child’s mother had briefly stepped out to fetch grass for their goats, only to return and find her daughter missing.
A frantic search ensued, with family members and neighbours combing the area. In a twist that later stunned many, the suspect is said to have participated in spreading information online about the child’s disappearance, appealing to the public for help in locating her.
Witness accounts indicate that the suspect had earlier been seen with the toddler on the day she vanished. It is alleged that the two children had been given sugarcane, leading to a disagreement before the situation turned tragic.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations later took over the case and interrogated those involved.
The suspect reportedly confessed to the killing and led officers to River Gura, where the child’s body was recovered days after she went missing.
The suspect, a young mother, is said to have claimed she was under the influence of supernatural forces at the time of the incident. She has since been taken into custody as investigations continue.
Tetu MP Geoffrey Wandeto condemned the incident, describing it as inhumane and calling for swift justice, while urging society to uphold the sanctity of life.
The heartbreaking case has sparked outrage and grief, with many Kenyans struggling to come to terms with the loss of such a young life under such disturbing circumstances.
