“Daddy, Ni Sawa Tu” : The Final, Reassuring Words of Captain Ruto’s Fallen Daughter

Captain William Ruto, the Managing Director of the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), broke down in tears as he mourned the death of his daughter Mitchell Jelimo Kemboi, recalling her reassuring words that once brought him comfort.

Mitchell, 18, died in a road accident on the night of Friday, April 3, when the family’s vehicle collided with a stationary car in Taita Taveta County, authorities confirmed.

Family, friends and well‑wishers gathered this week in an emotional tribute to honour the young woman’s life.

In a heartfelt address, Capt. Ruto described his daughter as a “beautiful soul” whose absence has left a void in the family that “words can’t fill”.

He shared intimate memories of Mitchell’s personality, highlighting her generosity, leadership and resilience.

Capt. Ruto recounted how Mitchell often comforted him with the Swahili phrase “daddy ni sawa tu” meaning “daddy, it’s okay” even when she did not get what she wished for.

He said the words reflected her understanding nature and grace.

Mitchell was described by her father as a unifier in the family, unafraid to speak her mind and naturally drawn to leadership.

Capt. Ruto noted she made friends easily even on her first day of high school and filled their home with joy.

Tears flowed as he shared his struggle with the senselessness of the loss, questioning why his daughter was taken instead of him, yet he sought solace in his faith.

He told attendees that Mitchell’s spirit will live on in the love she gave and the memories she created with her family.

The crash also injured other family members, including Capt. Ruto and his children, who were treated in hospital and have since been discharged, according to reports.

Officials in Taita Taveta are investigating the circumstances of the accident as funeral arrangements for Mitchell are underway. The family has asked for privacy during this period of mourning.

Mitchell’s death has drawn condolences from leaders, colleagues and members of the public.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen visited Capt. Ruto in hospital earlier and expressed sympathy on behalf of the government, acknowledging the impact of the tragedy on the family and the nation.

Support messages have continued to pour in as word of Mitchell’s passing spread, with many remembering her youthful spirit and kindness. Capt. Ruto’s tribute highlighted the unique bond between father and daughter, underscored by her comforting mantra.

Mitchell’s funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days, with leaders and members of the public planning to pay their respects.

The family’s release from hospital and return home marks the first step in a long grieving process for Capt. Ruto and his loved ones following the fatal accident.
