"She Will Never Be Taken" : Governor Ntutu's Fierce Vow Over Ng'eno's Widow Stirs Kenya

A grieving governor has drawn a line in the sand, and all of Kenya is watching.

At the burial of the late Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng'eno on Friday, March 6, Narok Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu made an extraordinary public declaration, insisting that his niece, Naiyanoi Ntutu Ng'eno, would remain Ng'eno's wife permanently, regardless of her widowhood.

"She is not ours anymore, and she cannot be married elsewhere," Ntutu told mourners, invoking African tradition to insist that even in death, Ng'eno's marriage bond remained unbroken. "No one will take her," he added, pledging the family's protection over the young widow.

Naiyanoi and Johana Ng'eno exchanged vows on August 18, 2018, in a colourful ceremony at Emurua Dikirr Secondary School attended by top leaders, including then Deputy President William Ruto.

The couple was blessed with two daughters, and just days before his death, the family had marked their eighth wedding anniversary.

Ng'eno died in the Nandi helicopter crash on Saturday, February 28, when the aircraft caught fire after hitting the ground shortly after takeoff, killing all six people on board.

Beyond her family name, Naiyanoi has carved her own path as a lawyer and women's rights advocate, working to help women in Narok and Emurua Dikirr access legal protection and civic education.

What makes Ntutu's declaration particularly striking is its tension with the very values his niece champions professionally. Naiyanoi has spent years encouraging women to understand the laws that protect them, stand up for themselves, and build the confidence to become future leaders.

The governor's remarks, rooted in Maasai custom, have sparked public debate about where cultural tradition ends and individual agency begins, especially for a widowed woman with two young children and a promising career ahead of her.
