Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has thrown down the gauntlet to President William Ruto, urging him to address political disagreements in Mount Kenya rather than commenting from afar.
Speaking to a crowd in Nyeri County on Thursday, Gachagua said the president should engage him directly on his home turf instead of making statements in other regions.
“If there are issues to discuss, let them be addressed here, where the people know the truth,” he remarked, emphasizing the need for transparent political dialogue.
This comes amid growing tension within Kenya’s political landscape, as alliances forged during previous electoral cycles continue to shift. Gachagua, once a close ally of Ruto, appears intent on asserting his influence in the Mount Kenya region, a traditional political stronghold that has become increasingly competitive.
Observers note that the call for a direct confrontation could signal rising intra-party friction ahead of the 2027 general elections. Analysts say Mount Kenya remains a key battleground, and political leaders are keenly aware of the region’s influence on national outcomes.
Residents in Nyeri welcomed Gachagua’s message, describing it as a call for accountability and transparency. “It’s good for leaders to speak directly to their people rather than rely on statements made elsewhere,” said one local community leader, highlighting the importance of leaders addressing constituents face-to-face.
Meanwhile, President Ruto has yet to respond publicly to Gachagua’s challenge. Political analysts suggest the president may be weighing his response carefully, given the sensitivity of intra-regional dynamics and the need to maintain a broader national appeal.
As political rhetoric heats up, all eyes will be on Mount Kenya to see if this challenge leads to direct engagement between the two leaders—or if it further deepens divisions within their political circles.
