Luhya elders in Kakamega County have declared that the community will field a presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking on Thursday, the elders said the community has resolved to front one of their own but will not reveal the candidate’s name at this stage to avoid premature political realignments.
The elders, drawn from Likuyani Constituency, noted that the Luhya community has several capable leaders who are qualified to appear on the presidential ballot.
According to one of the elders, the community will not support President Ruto’s re-election bid rejecting push being championed by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.
The declaration comes shortly after Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who hails from the region, received a warm reception during a recent rally in Kakamega.
President Ruto has been banking on the influence of Mudavadi and Wetang’ula to consolidate Western Kenya votes ahead of the 2027 contest.
