"Mnataka Twende Upinzani?" How Tana River Crowd Respnded To ODM's Intention to Join Opposition

Homa Bay Gladys Wanga on Thursday rallied Coastal residents to support the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) as the party moves to forge political pacts with other outfits ahead of 2027.

Speaking during a public gathering in Tana River, the governor told locals that ODM will field candidates from MCA to Governor but will leave out the presidential seat in support of President William Ruto.

She then asked the crowd whether they want to join opposition, prompting the crowd to reject the idea in unison.

The governor said ODM would not join what she termed as tribal-based political formations, assuring residents that the party remains committed to supporting the broad-based government.

She also urged locals to allow ODM party leader Oburu Odinga to spearhead negotiations with Ruto ahead of the 2027 elections, a proposal that was welcomed by the crowd.

Suna East MP Junet Mohamed maintained that ODM would not return to opposition politics.

He argued that former President Uhuru Kenyatta failed to secure victory for Raila Odinga in the 2022 presidential election and therefore could not be relied upon for any new political arrangement.

Junet urged Uhuru to keep off ODM’s internal affairs, insisting that the party remains united despite ongoing internal wrangles.

He further advised the former Head of State to either retire from active politics or focus on supporting his preferred candidate.

The remarks come after Oburu vowed to lead tough negotiations with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), insisting that ODM must secure a fair deal.

Oburu stated that the party’s negotiation team would be “very sharp” and inclusive, drawing representatives from across the country to conduct what he described as “very tough negotiations” with UDA.

Leaders allied to ODM also defended the party’s decision to join the government under the broad-based arrangement, saying the move was necessary to promote national stability at a time when the country was facing political and social unrest.
