A new storm is brewing in Kenya’s political arena as tensions rise over alleged backroom deals involving Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
Leaders from both Nyanza and Mt. Kenya regions have come out strongly.
Warning that they will withdraw their support for Kalonzo if he aligns himself with controversial political figures.
In Nyanza, a section of ODM-allied leaders has accused Kalonzo of “playing both sides,”
Claiming that reports of his secret engagements with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua point to political betrayal.
They argue that such a move would jeopardize the opposition’s unity,
Which is crucial as the country inches closer to the 2027 general elections.
The leaders warned that any partnership between Kalonzo and Gachagua would be seen as a direct affront to the Azimio coalition and its leadership.
At the same time, Mt. Kenya leaders have issued a stern caution to Kalonzo’s camp.
Saying they would not back him if President William Ruto is welcomed into Ukambani through any Wiper leader.
They claimed that such actions would signal political compromise and undermine Kalonzo’s credibility as an opposition figure.
According to them, the ongoing attempts to court both sides of the political divide are signs of inconsistency.
That could cost Kalonzo dearly in his bid to consolidate national support.
Political analysts believe these warnings reflect the growing mistrust and deep political divisions within the opposition.
As 2027 draws near, Kalonzo faces a delicate balancing act between maintaining his Azimio base and expanding his influence across the political spectrum.
Whether he can manage to navigate these competing interests without alienating key allies remains to be seen but the political ground around him is shifting fast.
