Samia Suluhu has finally revealed what happened in closed doors with President William Ruto before she publicly raised concerns over the controversial announcement of a proposed oil refinery in Tanga during his state visit to Tanzania.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan disclosed that during private discussions, she directly questioned President Ruto over why he had publicly announced the multi billion dollar refinery project without informing her government in advance.
She indicated that the move created confusion since the project is located within Tanzanian territory and required coordination between both administrations.
According to her account, she confronted Ruto inside their meeting and sought clarification on why such a major development had been declared before official agreement.
She added that the matter would be addressed further by the Kenyan leader.
President Ruto later acknowledged the concerns raised by his host, admitting that the announcement had not been well received.
He reportedly stated that he had been informed of the discomfort caused by his remarks and suggested that if he had known earlier, he would have proposed the refinery project for Mombasa instead of Tanga.
The incident occurred during Ruto’s official visit to Tanzania, which was largely intended to strengthen bilateral cooperation and deepen economic ties between the two countries.
However, the refinery announcement shifted attention away from the planned diplomatic agenda and sparked debate about coordination in regional partnerships.
The episode has added to ongoing discussions about President Ruto’s diplomatic style, which has at times attracted criticism for unexpected statements during international engagements.
Observers note that this is not the first time his public remarks have required clarification after drawing reactions from partner states.
In recent months, similar incidents have been reported in other diplomatic settings, raising questions about communication protocols in high level engagements.
Despite the controversy, both Kenya and Tanzania have continued to emphasize their commitment to cooperation on trade, infrastructure, and regional development projects.
However, the refinery episode has highlighted the importance of joint communication in major announcements involving shared interests.
