"Chewing What You Can't Swallow" Analysts Warns Ruto Against Touching Uhuru's Retirement Benefits

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has revived calls to review the retirement benefits of former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The move has been fueled by Kenyatta’s continued participation in politics, including criticizing William Ruto’s government and even supporting candidates ahead of the 2027 election.

Kenyatta himself has insisted that he has no intention of contesting for any office, but that he has the right to participate in politics as a member of his party.

This is in contrast to what happened in 2002 after the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) under the leadership of the late Mwai Kibaki won power and ended the 40-year rule of the Kenya African National Union (KANU).

The country was on verge of entering into revenge politics. There was intense pressure from some politicians to arrest former President Daniel arap Moi over alleged offenses committed during his 24-year rule.

However, President Kibaki intervened and stopped those moves according to Former Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs Kiraitu Murungi.

He noted that Kibaki did not want the nation to descend into revenge politics against his predecessor.

The proposal to strip retirement benefits has reignited debate about revenge politics, which has long been part of Kenya’s political history.

Political analysts warn that such a move could have political consequences, especially for President Ruto as he prepares for the 2027 election.

In the vote-rich Mt. Kenya region, any action perceived as targeting Kenyatta could trigger fresh political tensions.

In addition, the opposition could use the situation as a political weapon against the government.
