’They Are Not Who You Think’: Kisii Man Nearly Falls Victim to Relatives’ Greed After Inheriting Family Land, Saved Only by Father’s Timely Warning

I never thought I would hear those words from my father: “They are not who you think.” At the time, I didn’t understand the weight of his warning.

I thought he was being overly cautious, maybe even paranoid. But now, looking back, I realize those words saved me from one of the worst mistakes of my life.

I am Kevin. I had recently inherited a small piece of land in Kisii from my late uncle, a property that had been in the family for generations.

Excited and naive, I began to make plans — a new house, a small business, and even renting part of the land to friends. I felt proud of myself, thinking I was finally stepping into financial independence.

It all started innocently. Relatives from my late uncle’s side, people I grew up trusting, began visiting more often. They laughed with me, shared memories, and seemed genuinely interested in my life.

They asked about the property, offered “advice” on construction, and even suggested helping me manage the land. I welcomed their support. After all, family was supposed to be trustworthy.

One evening, my father called. I had just returned from Nairobi, where I had been discussing construction plans with a contractor. “Kevin,” he said, his voice serious, “listen carefully.

They are not who you think. Some relatives will pretend to care, but their only interest is what they can take from you. Guard yourself.”

I laughed nervously. “Dad, they’re family. I trust them. You’re overthinking.”

But his tone left no room for argument. “Kevin, mark my words. Watch every move. Don’t sign anything or give them access to money or property. I’ve seen this happen too many times.”

I tried to dismiss it. My cousins seemed sincere. They even invited me to a family gathering in Nyamira to celebrate my plans. I went, thinking I was being careful, but I didn’t realize how cunning some people could be.

At the gathering, they praised my ambitions and suggested they could help me secure loans for the house. One of them even volunteered to “handle the legal documents” so everything would be easier for me. My excitement made me temporarily blind to the subtle manipulations.read more....
