A fresh political dispute has emerged in Kenya’s Mt Kenya region following remarks by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua targeting National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah.
In a widely circulated video, Gachagua declared that Ichung’wah would not be permitted to address political gatherings in the region, accusing him of betrayal and disloyalty to local political interests.
Speaking in a charged tone, Gachagua alleged that leaders perceived as undermining the Mt Kenya political agenda had been effectively sidelined.
His remarks, delivered partly in Swahili, suggested a coordinated effort to block individuals he described as “traitors” from influencing the region’s political direction.
The statements have intensified scrutiny of internal divisions within the ruling Kenya Kwanza alliance, with Mt Kenya remaining a crucial voting bloc in national politics.
Observers note that the dispute reflects broader tensions over leadership, loyalty, and control of the region’s political narrative as alignments begin to shift ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.
Gachagua has recently stepped up criticism of Ichung’wah, accusing him of disrespecting the Kikuyu community and weakening regional unity.
In response, Ichung’wah has publicly defended himself, outlining the origins of his fallout with Gachagua and rejecting several of the accusations.
The escalating exchange has placed the two leaders on opposing sides of a growing political rift, raising questions about cohesion within their political camp.
Supporters from both sides have taken to social media, with some endorsing Gachagua’s firm stance while others warn that such rhetoric risks deepening divisions in the region.
As the situation unfolds, attention is turning to Ichung’wah’s next move and whether he will directly respond to the latest remarks, which could further shape political dynamics in Mt Kenya.

Is Rigathi Gachaghua the law giver in Mt.Kenya? This tribal man should be charged with incitement. How can you utter such words in a civilised society?
